What are the best places to visit in Mexico??

Mexico City

There really is no more fascinating city in the world than Mexico's misunderstood capital. With a population of over 21 million (and a crime rate about a third of Washington, DC's), Mexico City had a serious scrub-up for its bicentennial, and now some places like mariachi-filled Plaza Garibaldi are considered (like Times Square in New York) safe enough to be a 'Disney version' of its former gritty self.

Mérida

Mérida, The colorful capital of the Yucatan state, has a rich Mayan and colonial heritage. Mérida is gorgeous colonial city about three hours inland from Cancun. The buildings are well-preserved and brightly colored. The city itself is the best place to enjoy amazing Yucatecan foods like cochinita pibil (is a traditional Mexican slow-roasted pork dish), papadzules, and panuchos. The city is best on weekends when the historical core – a scene of 17th-century cathedrals made from Mayan bricks – closes to vehicles and fills with open-air stages, taco stands, and balloon vendors. Days here can be spent taking in the gorgeous architecture, visiting world-class museums, and of course, digging into the mouth-watering cuisine. If you’re looking for the perfect base to explore all that this corner of Mexico has to offer, look no further. From here, you’re just a short ride away from the beach, numerous archaeological sites, and plenty of opportunities for adventure. It’s a great alternative to the overly touristy places like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Mérida Mexico truly has so much to offer visitors. We’ve been regularly traveling to Yucatan’s lovely capital city for the past five years and continue to discover so many awesome things to do in Mérida every time. Mérida truly is a beautiful travel destination, inside and out. Nicknamed the Ciudad Blanca (why Mérida city), you certainly do see some white structures while roaming around the grid-like streets of this charming colonial city. Yet we find that the white buildings are actually outnumbered by colorful pastel architecture, adding much vibrancy to Mérida’s colonial look. But it’s Mérida’s culture that shines through even brighter. Perhaps that helps to explain why Mérida is the only city that has been twice selected to serve as the American Capital of Culture (2000, 2017). You can find culture oozing all throughout Mérida, whether admiring ancient Mayan artwork at a museum or simply soaking in the local culture that’s abundant within the swinging doors of Mérida’s cantinas. The many cultural things to do in Mérida and even the city’s daily cultural events are a big appeal to Yucatan’s largest city.

The people of Mérida are welcoming and proud of the beautiful cultural center they call home.
